PILATES at LIFE FIT

Most people these days are familiar with the word Pilates although not necessarily exactly what it is.  We don’t want to bore you with lots of jargon and lingo so here is some information that may help you understand a bit more about the benefits and principles behind Pilates

Pilates is a mind body conditioning exercise program originated by Joseph Pilates.  It focuses attention on core postural muscles that help keep the human body balanced and provide support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and of alignment of the spine, and strengthen the deep torso and abdominal muscles.

This is achieved through eight main principles; concentration, centring, breathing, isolation, routine, precision, control and flowing movement.

Pilates suits all ages and fitness levels and is particularly beneficial for those with back pain, poor postures, neurological conditions,  sports injuries, arthritis, stress related illness and before and after pregnancy.

As Chartered Physiotherapists we are able to combine the key elements of the Pilates ethos with our knowledge of physiotherapy and other therapeutic exercise regimes to achieve the best possible outcome.

Both 1-1 Pilates based exercise regimes as well as small group classes are available here at The Hub, Grangemouth with Arlene Bowmaker.

“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. In order to achieve happiness, it is imperative to gain mastery of your body. If at the age of 30 you are stiff and out of shape, you are old. If at 60 you are supple and strong then you are young.”  Joseph Pilates
